Oceana County Responds to IT Incident

The County of Oceana is in the process of responding to an IT incident involving unauthorized access to our information technology systems by an unknown third party. We are addressing this matter with the highest priority and working with outside experts in accordance with industry best practices to restore full IT operations responsibly and securely.

On the morning of Tuesday, October 26, we became aware of an unauthorized intrusion into our IT network that disrupted access to some servers and computer equipment. Upon discovery, we immediately initiated a comprehensive response, including immediately taking multiple system components offline and engaging independent IT security and computer forensic specialists to help us remediate and investigate the incident. We also are coordinating and sharing information with law enforcement.

The County website was not impacted and has continued operating without disruption. However, County employee email and a variety of IT applications and services are temporarily unavailable and will remain offline while we continue to investigate. We have no indication of any impact on the County Sheriff’s IT operations, which continue to run normally, and there will be no impact to 911 operations, which are run independently from the County. In addition, County court and case management systems are run offsite through third-party systems applications and therefore will remain available.

We are in the process of activating advanced monitoring and threat detection across our network and implementing additional security measures to protect our systems and data. We will be conducting a detailed forensic investigation as part of our response and are committed to taking all appropriate action in response to our findings.

We apologize for any inconvenience to County residents caused by this incident. County staff will be using manual procedures where possible to facilitate citizen and community services.

The County will be posting updates on the homepage of our website (www.oceana.mi.us) as our response continues.
